Energoatom of Ukraine to Upgrade FSS for Zaporizhzhya

November 2018, WSC was awarded a contract by Energoatom of Ukraine to upgrade the Full Scope Simulator (FSS) for Zaporizhzhya Unit 1 Nuclear Power Plant (Zap NPP). Zap NPP is located in Southern Ukraine and operates 6 VVER-1000 units with a total capacity of 6000 MWe. It is currently the largest electrical generating nuclear power plant site in Europe. The VVER-1000 units are undergoing major plant upgrades to extend their operating life. This includes the upgrade of controls to modern Distributed Control Systems (DCS) which will be applied and tested on the Zap Unit 1 FSS.

WSC will re-host and replace the FSS models, including the reactor thermal-hydraulic and neutronics using 3KEYRELAP5-RT and NESTLE codes with the addition of a severe accident model based on MELCOR. WSC will also modernize all computer hardware and implement the new Distributed Control System (DCS) on the FSS for the Reactor and Turbine Islands.
